Polychromal is a family-run business founded in the 1960s that has since grown to become an international industrial manufacturer. The company's founder - Herman Hensen, father to the current Managing Directors, Stephan and Eric Hensen - started producing nameplates and faceplates from his home in 1965. He experimented constantly with photographic printing techniques for incorporating colourful lettering and images in anodised aluminium, thus laying the foundations for the current, state-of-the-art company. A passion for the strength and appearance of aluminium still forms the driving force behind Polychromal's operations.
Following its successful pioneering years in the 1960s, the company grew rapidly and expanded its operations to several facilities in the 1970s. In the 1980s, the various business activities were consolidated at the current headquarters in Alkmaar. The company continued to grow to the point that a division-based structure was implemented in 2003. A wide variety of customers within diverse sectors demanded ongoing specialization. In 2008, the company expanded still further with a separate facility being opened for the INTF division. The core of the company's manufacturing facilities was radically overhauled and renewed with the installation of an eco-friendly anodising plant. At the same time, the digital DS-Aluprinter and DSE-Aluprinter, and their corresponding inks, were developed in response to an unrelenting demand for digitalization.
