Wood has always been the core material in the Ethnicraft collection. Therefore it is our moral obligation to think about the consequences for the environment and take environmental issues to heart: from the origin of the wood, the energy we use in the entire production and distribution process, to the treatment of the products and reduction of waste.

The origin of our core material

Wood is infinitely renewable. In fact it's the world's most renewable and environmentally friendly raw material. No matter how much we use, we can always replace it. We can go on growing as much wood as we like, for as long as we like. If we use more wood and grow more wood, our whole life will be more sustainable, our environment will be cleaner and our future will be more secure.

Ethnicraft's teak wood comes from two main sources. On the one hand, it is carefully reclaimed timber extracted from neglected buildings or old warehouses without cultural significance, mainly from the island of Central Java in Indonesia. On the other hand, Ethnicraft works closely together with the Indonesian government body in charge of managing the teak plantations originally set up by the Dutch about 150 years ago. This government agency applies strict policies with regard to annual replanting, as well as to the size and quantity of trees felled each year.
