La biologie moléculaire permet l’identification d’agents pathogènes par leur génotype (ADN) à la place de l’identification phénotypique de la microbiologie.

- Approche syndromique
La microbiologie ou la PCR cible en général quelques microorganismes par analyse. L’approche syndromique elle, vise à identifier simultanément tous les pathogènes potentiellement responsables du syndrome.
