Founded in October 1978, Apollo Art Gallery is one of the first private institution in Taiwan which presented art works of local artist at a time when governmental art institutions, like Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Kaohsiung Fine Arts Museum etc., were not existing. The majority of the masters of the generation from 1900-1930, like Lee Shih-Chiao, Lee Tse-Fan, Kuo Hsueh-Hu, Hung Jui-Lin, Chang Wan-Chuan, Max Liu... had their first exhibition at the Apollo Art Gallery in the 1980s. Their works have fundamental meanings for the development of art in Taiwan.
Beginning from 1990s the gallery is dedicating to presentation of oversea Taiwanese/Chinese artists with outstanding achievement. Like Walasse Ting (Holland), San Yu (France), Dai Bih-In (Spain), Santos Hu (Spain), Hou Ching-Lang (France), Hilo Chen (USA), Tzen Sieur (USA), Huang Chao-Mo (Belgium), Shudan (Spain) etc.
To promote the Taiwanese/Chinese painters by participating at international art fairs or by arranging exhibitions outside Asia, like curating "Chiang Han-Tung oil paintings" at the Museum of Ethnology in Vienna (Austria; 1992), has always been a main goal of the gallery. Apollo Art Gallery is also focusing on promoting contemporary art and encouraging young talents.
